Team USA rallied out of a 2-0 hole to secure a thrilling, 3-2 victory over Finland in the semifinals Thursday. Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier scored the winning goal in the waning minutes of regulation to vault the Americans into the Gold Medal Game for the first time since 2021 — the last year that they won the event.

Team USA has showcased a potent attack this tournament, as the Americans lead all teams with 39 goals. In six games — five wins and one overtime win — they're outscoring the opposition 39-13.

Sweden, the host for this year’s tournament, is headed to the gold medal game for the first time since 2018. In Thursday’s semifinal contest, Sweden netted three goals — including two from Canucks’ prospect Jonathan Lekkerimaki — in the final period to down Czechia, 5-2.

Sweden is eyeing its first gold medal since 2012.

The game will be a rematch of last year’s Bronze Medal Game, an 8-7 overtime victory for the Americans.

USA vs. Sweden start time

Date: Friday, Jan. 5

Start time: 1:30 p.m. ET

The gold medal game between USA and Sweden will start at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday, Jan. 5 at the Scandinavium in Gothenburg, Sweden.

E.J. Hradek (play-by-play), Dave Starman (color analyst) and Jon Rosen (sideline reporter) will have the call for NHL Network, as they have for each of Team USA's games throughout the tournament.

On Friday, two exciting teams filled with prospective NHL talent get set to square off in Sweden to determine who takes home the gold in the IIHF World Junior Championship Final.

The Americans came into the tournament as the favorite to win the gold. Though they had a close call against Czechia in the group stage, they have done plenty to make it back to the championship game for the first time in three years. They had to be resilient in the semifinals, as they rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to Finland, as Cutter Gauthier’s tournament-leading 12th point ended up being the game-winning goal in the 3-2 victory.

Michigan State products Trey Augustin and Isaac Howard have been significant parts of the Americans’ run to their eighth Gold Medal Game. They are 5-2, having beaten Canada in 2021 to win their latest championship.

Sweden came into the knockout stage after finishing first in Group A. They had their scare in the quarterfinals, needing overtime to take down Switzerland. A strong third period against Czechia in the semis sent the host nation to the final game for the 14th time.

What a story it would be for Sweden, to win gold on home ice. Unfortunately, as talented as they have been year in and year out, the Swedes have typically choked in the medal round. While they have two gold medals under their belt, winning it all in 1981 and 2012, Sweden’s 11 silver medals are second to the Soviet Union/Russia. They lost in their last Gold Medal Game appearance in 2018 to Canada, losing in OT to Finland the last time the tournament was held in Sweden eight years ago.

The United States is 18-16-2-1 against Sweden, beating Tre Kronor in the Bronze Medal Game last year. These two met in the Gold Medal Game in 2013, with the Americans coming out on top in Russia.

Czechia is trying to win the bronze for the seventh time, while Finland is looking to win a medal for the third time in the last four tournaments.

It all comes down to this. The 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship has reached its final stage as host Sweden will take on Team USA for the gold medal. These were the two best teams throughout the tournament and now there’s one game to determine who was best of all.

The U.S. is unbeaten in tournament play thus far, but faced its toughest game yet in the semifinal, overcoming a 2-0 deficit after the first period to win 3-2 on a late goal by Cutter Gauthier (PHI).

Sweden has one shootout loss – to Finland – in the tournament and is otherwise unblemished. They rode a big third period against Czechia in the semifinal to earn a 5-2 win and a spot in the final on home ice.

A sold-out crowd is expected for the tournament finale, creating a wild environment with the tournament hosts drawing near capacity crowds for every game so far at the Scandinavium. It should be quite the scene and a very interesting game.

There is no question the two best teams in this tournament are playing in the final game. Sweden didn’t allow a goal over their first three games of the tournament and has had to battle some adversity in the medal round.

The Swedes have an especially strong D corps led by Axel Sandin Pellikka (DET), a solid goalie in Hugo Havelid and a forward group that has the skill to make a lot of plays. Jonathan Lekkerimaki (VAN) took over in the semifinal and scored multiple big goals for his team when they needed him most.

This is a team that can defend well, not allowing much through the middle. They’re a more physical team than we’re used to seeing from Sweden in this event as they have defenders that can throw their weight around and bigger forwards that find ways to get to the interior.

The speed and skill of Sweden's forward group is going to present a new challenge for USA's defense. They had to adjust to how hard Finland forechecked and disrupted them in the defensive zone. Once that adjustment was made, however, USA was able to dominate possession. That is unlikely going to be as easy against this Swedish team.
