Boston University Medical School

Our mission is to advocate for a healthy balance of mental, emotional and physical well-being which can help complement and enhance the medical student experience and to provide students with resources for personal and professional development. As physicians-in-training, we all share an underlying desire to help other people, yet we struggle to help ourselves or our colleagues when faced with our own adversity. Through this 40 plus student run Initiative, we seek to break down these barriers in communication and restore a sense of community. We host a variety of events from group runs, paint nights, and therapy dog sessions to hosting our annual Wellness fair where we bring all the Boston Area wellness resources to the students in one place. Everything from free fitness class passes and free massage sessions to mental health resources are all brought under one roof each year.

Alex Zhuang

Alex is currently a second-year medical student and is incredibly excited to help promote both physical and mental wellness at BUSM and beyond! He grew up in Solon, Ohio for the first decade of his life and lived in Shanghai, China for the next eight. He attended Boston College and has stayed in the city ever since graduating. In his free time, he enjoys playing volleyball, soccer, and DJing for friends.

Daniel Howard

Daniel is a current M2 at BUSM. Sports and the outdoors have been an enormous part of his life since he was a kid. He grew up in rural northern California playing soccer, hockey, and tennis (to name a few) and did his undergrad at Chapman University where he played for the men’s soccer team. After college, he fell in love with powerlifting and continued to train and compete during his first year at BUSM. On the weekends you can probably find him climbing mountains or snowboarding. He’s passionate about fitness and excited to have the opportunity to continue helping others, both in and out of the gym.

Jeffery Schemm

Jeffrey is a first-year medical student at Boston University with a passion for fitness, nutrition, and preventative health. As an Exercise Science major in undergrad, he learned about the many long-standing health benefits of exercise and a healthy lifestyle, which has motivated him to pursue a medical career where he can empower patients to make advantageous decisions for their short-term fitness goals and long-term health. In his own life, he has found exercise and recreation to be the ultimate escape from the stresses of school and life, especially in medical school. He joined Medicine in Motion so he can further his passion for physical health and to join a community of current and future health professionals looking to do the same!

Jonathan Fu

Jonathan is 3rd year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine. While pursuing a BA in Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, he served as a certified personal trainer and performed biomedical engineering research in neurorehabilitation. Over the last few years, Jonathan has joined various competitions such as the Tough Mudder and powerlifting, and while at BUSM he helped bring fitness instructors to provide structured activities for Parkinson’s patients. Jonathan believes physical wellbeing is an integral part of medicine, and is eager to play his part in building the Medicine in Motion community.

Kyle Lawrence

Kyle is a second-year medical student at Boston University School of Medicine. He graduated from Boston College in 2018 with a degree in biology before working in research and development in the biopharmaceutical industry, where he focused on optimizing drug delivery and potency in human tissue. Kyle has a passion for physical fitness and a strong interest in using physical activity to improve overall health. Formerly an avid hockey and baseball player, Kyle now spends his free time focused on functional strength training, skiing, and golf.
