Entries are out for the combined World Rowing Under 19 & Under 23 Championships, to take place in Varese, Italy from 25-31 July. World Rowing has received entries for 1452 competitors coming from 61 nations. Joining the two regattas into one was last done at the combined 2016 World Rowing Under 23, Junior and Senior Championships in Rotterdam. A total of 36 boat classes will be contested – 14 for the Under 19 and 22 for the Under 23. The home nation, Italy, has entered a full contingent, with France and Germany also coming with a large number. Entries also include a wide representation from across the globe with entries from Paraguay, Brazil, Singapore, Thailand and Vanuatu. The biggest entry in the Under 23 category is the men’s single sculls. Twenty-seven nations have entered their top male scullers. The reigning World Under 23 Champion, Emil Neykov of Bulgaria, will try to defend his title against Callum Dixon of Great Britain, who finished fourth at the 2022 World Rowing Cup I, and Isaiah Harrison of the USA, bronze medallist at the junior championships last year and holder of multiple indoor world records. The Under 23 women’s single sculls is also well-represented, with 24 nations having made entries. A top performance is expected to come from the reigning champion, Alexandra Foester of Germany, who just won the 2022 World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne in stunning fashion. Foester will be up against Aurelia-Maxima Janzen of Switzerland, the 2021 World Rowing Junior Champion and runner-up at the Under 23s, now famous on the circuit for competing with her macon blades. Keep an eye as well on Anna Santruckova of the Czech Republic and Elis Osbay of Turkey. At the Under 19 level, competition will be fierce at all stages. The United States of America have an entry in every event and the Under 19 men’s eight looks promising on paper, returning three of their gold medallists from last year’s championships. They will have to face the usual powerhouses from Germany, Great Britain and Australia, but also Italy and France. The USA will also be favourites in the women’s eight, with two gold medallists from Plovdiv 2021 returning in the boat. Tougher competition awaits them this time with New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain looking to break the American domination in that boat class. Racing will be held on Lago di Varese, which has previously hosted the 2021 European Rowing Championships and will host the 2023 World Rowing Cup II. The World Rowing Under 23 Championships is raced in 22 boat classes and is open to all World Rowing Federation member federations. Rowers must be under the age of 23. The Under 23s began in 1976 and was called the ‘Seniors Match’. The name was then changed to the ‘Nations Cup’ before becoming the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in 2005. For rowers to be eligible to compete at the World Rowing Under 19 Championships, they must be 18 years of age or under. A rower can compete in the Under 19 category until 31 December of the year in which he or she reaches the age of 18; after that date the rower advances to the Under 23 category.
